Babcock’s LGE business has secured a contract to deliver its innovative ammonia fuel supply system, ecoFGSS-FLEX®, which enables the safe, efficient and sustainable use of ammonia as a propulsion fuel in the marine sector.

The agreement marks a major milestone in the decarbonisation of global shipping. By facilitating the adoption of ammonia as a viable alternative to traditional fossil fuels, the ecoFGSS-FLEX® system represents a significant step toward a cleaner and more sustainable future. The contract reflects LGE’s continued commitment to advancing clean energy technologies and accelerating the maritime industry’s transition to zero-carbon fuels.

Developed in-house by LGE’s expert engineering team, the ecoFGSS-FLEX® system will be installed on board four Medium Gas Carriers being built for global commodities group Trafigura at Hyundai Mipo Dockyard (HMD) in South Korea. The system has been designed to integrate seamlessly with wider onboard systems and meet the highest safety and environmental standards.

Neale Campbell, Managing Director of LGE, emphasised the business’s commitment to delivering sustainable, future-ready technologies that support customers in the shift to cleaner energy. He described ammonia as a potentially transformative fuel in the marine sector’s decarbonisation journey, and highlighted the new contract as a strong endorsement of LGE’s innovation and capability to meet evolving industry demands.

Andrea Olivi, Global Head of Shipping at Trafigura, also welcomed the partnership, noting the importance of LGE’s technology and expertise in enabling ammonia to become a practical and safer marine fuel. As one of the world’s largest vessel charterers, Trafigura continues to explore low-emission alternatives, with dual-fuel vessels offering the flexibility to adopt greener energy sources such as ammonia as they become more widely available.

With international shipping currently contributing around 3% of global greenhouse gas emissions, the marine industry is under increasing pressure to transition to alternative energy sources. LGE’s ecoFGSS-FLEX® supports the sector’s alignment with the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) targets for emissions reduction.

In addition to the Trafigura project, LGE is collaborating with several other leading shipowners to incorporate the technology into both newbuild and retrofit applications.

Deployment of the ecoFGSS-FLEX® system is scheduled to commence in 2027, with full operational capability expected by the end of that year.
