British Steel has played a key role in restoring a historic rail connection in East Sussex, supplying new rail to the Rother Valley Railway as part of its ambitious project to reconnect Bodiam and Robertsbridge.

The company delivered 71 tonnes of 56E1 profile rail directly to site using a HIAB crane, which was also used by project teams to move existing stock rails into position. Darren Cole, UK Account Manager, Rail at British Steel, said: “This supply is an excellent example of how we can work with smaller UK customers to provide a flexible and scalable solution to meet their needs. We are following this project with great interest and commend the volunteers for their hard work and dedication.”

The Rother Valley Railway is a volunteer-led initiative dedicated to resurrecting the missing 3.5-mile section of track. Once complete, it will create a continuous link between the Kent and East Sussex Railway at Bodiam and the main line at Robertsbridge.

Rother Valley Railway Chairman Mike Hart praised the support, saying: “We are incredibly grateful to British Steel for their generous support in supplying new rail for our heritage railway project. Their contribution marks a significant step forward in reconnecting Bodiam and Robertsbridge, helping us preserve and celebrate the rich railway history of East Sussex. This partnership exemplifies how collaboration between industry and charitable organisations can achieve meaningful, lasting impact. Together, we’re laying the foundations—quite literally—for a future where heritage and community go hand in hand.”

When complete, the extended 14-mile route will provide a direct link to the Kent and East Sussex line at Bodiam, enabling through running and opening up improved transport access to major visitor attractions. These include the National Trust’s Bodiam Castle and the market town of Tenterden, widely regarded as the “Jewel of the Weald.” The reconnection is expected to deliver significant economic benefits to the region by attracting more visitors, enhancing sustainable transport options, and preserving a valuable part of Britain’s railway heritage.
