British Steel has welcomed Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson to its Scunthorpe site as the company prepares to take on nearly 60 new apprentices this autumn.

The visit comes as British Steel announced that 59 apprentices will join the business in September, marking the first time in two years it has been able to launch a new intake. The programme is seen as a significant step in creating opportunities for young people across the region while underlining the company’s long-term commitment to UK steelmaking.

Speaking during her tour, Ms Phillipson said the news was “fantastic for the region and for those apprentices,” adding that it demonstrates “the bright future that steelmaking has in the UK.”

She was joined by current electrical apprentice Niles Procter-Green, who is set to complete his training with the company. Reflecting on his own experience, he described his apprenticeship as “the key to the door” for a career in the steel industry, calling it “a great opportunity.”

The company said it remains committed to investing in skills and development to support both its workforce and the wider steel sector.
