Company: Rolls-Royce
Tell us a bit about yourself. This can include telling us what fires you up about the job you do, your professional achievements, your career highlights. What inspires you? What attracted you to pursue a career in manufacturing? Is there anything else you’d like to say about either your job or UK manufacturing?
I’m a 2024 Mechanical Engineering graduate from Durham University, having completed a year-long internship with Rolls-Royce during my degree. I have recently rejoined the company on the graduate scheme. Manufacturing has always appealed to me due to its ability to turn ideas and plans into something tangible.
Working in the sector and seeing the work involved between these stages has only interested me more. I have a passion for sustainability and incorporating this into my role as an engineer has been especially fulfilling. A focus of this work has been on the measurement of sustainability within manufacturing. This has included using sustainability measurement techniques such as lifecycle assessments – creating simple sustainability impact tools for use internally – and influencing company-wide strategy on sustainability measurement.
What advice would you give to your younger self?
Being so early on in my career I think I still am my younger self! But the most beneficial piece of advice I have received is to spend this early stage of my career expanding my knowledge, interests and network. Being on a rotational graduate scheme gives me the unique opportunity to explore many different engineering roles and interact with a diverse range of people. Taking advantage of this has taught me so much.
What is your favourite engineered/manufactured product?
I love to cook, so I’d have to say my blender/smoothie maker. It has so many uses and has lasted me years.
Please give one interesting fact about yourself that not many people know.
My first engineering job was a summer internship designing a repairable toaster.
If you weren’t in manufacturing what would be your dream job?
Working in sustainability in a different way. I love spending time in nature, so working in habitat conservation would be a fun job.
