A ripple of digital transformation is sweeping through a rural industrial estate in Whitestake, west Lancashire, where five manufacturers are modernising with support from Made Smarter.
The government-backed programme helps SMEs adopt new technologies and digital leadership skills. Its influence began with Surefit Fitted Furniture, a bespoke cabinetmaker, and spread through word of mouth to C&E Aluminium Systems, MJH Joinery, Reverse Engineering, and Rustic Tubs.
Together the companies have created tailored digital roadmaps, invested £181,000 in technology projects with Made Smarter grants, and enrolled one future leader onto the Leading Digital Transformation (LDT) programme. They are now forecasting growth, new jobs, and building a peer-led local network to inspire more manufacturers.
Sarah Woodhams, Made Smarter North West’s Technology Adoption Specialist, described the effect as “organic and inspiring”, adding: “From one spark of inspiration, we’ve seen a ripple effect of innovation and collaboration – the emergence of a rural manufacturing powerhouse.”
Surefit, the catalyst, invested in a CNC machine and design software, increasing turnover by 25%, saving six hours a week, cutting waste by 15%, and improving scheduling. Three new jobs are expected. “It’s like having an extra man and producing a better product,” said owner Steve Hill, who encouraged his neighbours at the estate’s “lunchtime butty van”.
C&E Aluminium Systems followed, gaining a 20% productivity boost, 10 hours saved weekly, a 25% profit increase, and one new job. “It’s not just one machine, it’s data, connectivity, and continuous improvement,” said co-owner Lee Ellis.
Reverse Engineering is investing in a CNC fibre laser, bringing processes in-house, creating five jobs, and enrolling a team member on the LDT programme to build long-term capability. MJH Joinery, meanwhile, is embracing digital cautiously, with support from Made Smarter workshops. Rustic Tubs, the latest to join, is exploring 3D printing to streamline filter design.
“Seeing my neighbours thrive gave me the confidence to take the plunge,” said founder Andy Walsh. “It’s just about spreading the word.”
