Electric Car Grant expanded to 13 more models, cutting prices by £1,500

The cost of going electric has dropped again as the government’s flagship Electric Car Grant (ECG) scheme adds 13 new models from some of Britain’s best-known carmakers, including Nissan, Renault and Vauxhall.

Drivers can save £1,500 on a range of newly eligible electric vehicles (EVs), with discounts automatically applied at the point of sale. The expansion brings the number of discounted models announced this week to 17, as the government ramps up its £650m programme aimed at making EV ownership more affordable while boosting UK jobs and manufacturing under its Plan for Change.

The ECG targets cars priced at £37,000 or less to ensure support is directed towards the most affordable models. More vehicles are expected to join the scheme in the coming weeks as manufacturers’ applications are reviewed against environmental and sustainability criteria.

The move is part of a wider £4.5bn government investment in the UK’s electric vehicle transition. Britain became Europe’s largest EV market in 2024, with sales rising by nearly one-third in the first half of 2025. Officials say the scheme will help cement that lead while supporting domestic manufacturing and supply chains.

Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander said the expansion underlined the government’s commitment to cutting costs for motorists and accelerating the shift to low-emission transport.

“With discounts on 17 car models announced this week alone, we’re delivering on our promise to make it easier and cheaper for families to go electric,” she said. “This is about backing drivers, putting money back into people’s pockets and creating the jobs and growth that will drive Britain forward.”

The 13 new vehicles added to the scheme are: Renault Alpine A290, Renault Megane, Renault 4, Renault 5, Renault Scenic, Nissan Micra, Nissan Ariya (available from 13 August), Vauxhall Corsa Electric, Vauxhall Combo Life Electric, Vauxhall Astra Electric, Vauxhall Mokka Electric, Vauxhall Frontera Electric and Vauxhall Grandland Electric — each with a £1,500 discount.
