We welcomed a very special guest to this year’s Smart Manufacturing Week – Guenther Steiner, former Principal of Haas Formula One.
During our interview Guenther Steiner highlighted his experience in Formula One since 1986, including founding Haas F1 in 2014, which debuted in 2016.
With their entry in the 2016 season, Haas became the first US constructor to compete in F1 in 30 years. The team took eight points at the 2016 Australian Grand Prix with a sixth place finish, becoming the first US entry, and the first constructor overall since Toyota Racing in 2002, to score in their debut race. Haas completed the season with an eighth place finish in the 2016 constructor standings.
Guenther emphasised the importance of teamwork, managing egos and keeping team members informed and engaged. He also noted the significant role of data in Formula One, stressing the need for AI tools to manage vast amounts of data. Speaking with The Manufacturer, Guenther said: “There is almost too much data in F1 these days, and a human cannot look at that data so you need AI tools.
“But in F1 we have look at data to get information and make the car better. And this is also the case in manufacturing. Analyse your data as well as you can and find the data that actually makes you better for the future.”
At Smart Manufacturing Week, Guenther also joined Tom for a fireside chat in the Technology Showcase Arena, where he gave manufacturing and engineering professionals across all sectors a rare insight into how elite teams perform under pressure and how those lessons can be applied to the factory floor.
